Day Tripping Fort Wilderness
A lot of my Disney friends are interested in Fort Wilderness, but do not want to try camping. It is easy to spend time at the campground without actually staying there. We planned a day trip while staying at a different hotel to try out this concept. Day tripping to Fort Wilderness was easy and a great deal of fun. If you would like to experience some of the things only found at Fort Wilderness while at Disney World, but don’t want to stay at the campground, this is the way to go.
A week or so before Labor Day weekend, my husband starting talking about going hiking in the mountains with a friend of his. I’m always happy when he gets the urge to go play in the woods, as it means Samantha and I will head south for some Disney time. Even better, one of my college friends has since moved to the Orlando area. She was free one day that weekend and willing to join us for a day at Fort Wilderness. My friend Laurie has a lot of energy and a zest for life. Way back in our college days, she and I did a week at Disney together. Back then, she was the one who first visited Fort Wilderness. Ironically, she has not been back since, so a day at the campground seemed like the perfect way to reconnect.
Given the late notice, all the usual Disney hotels we enjoy were either full or extremely expensive. On the other hand, the Hilton in Disney Springs was running a great special. I booked three nights for us there to enjoy the holiday weekend with the thought we would spend a full day at Fort Wilderness to avoid holiday crowds in the park.
As I may have mentioned far too often in this report, golf carts are key to having spontaneous fun in Fort Wilderness. The same day I made the hotel reservations, I called and reserved a golf cart for the day I planned to spend at the campground. And yes, it is perfectly fine to reserve a golf cart even if you are not planning to stay at Fort Wilderness. However, it is best to do this as soon as you have trip dates. I got lucky with a cancellation and was able to book at the last minute. I would not count on this every time.
At press time, the golf carts are $59 per day. Call (407) 824-2742 to book. Having a golf cart rental reservation counts as a legitimate way to park at the campground on busy days when the parking lot is closed to guests unless they are staying at Fort Wilderness or have a reservation. A security guard confirmed this for us when we drove over to the campground to pick up the golf cart. It was the first and only time I’ve seen the entire parking lot at the check-in building for Fort Wilderness almost full.
After driving around the
